Sat on a tuffet,

Eating her curds and whey. ...

I'm sure you remember this old nursery rhyme and wondered what are curds and whey?

When making cheese, the milk has to curdle first. When it curdles, there are curds and a watery liquid, the latter being the whey. The curds are separated from the liquid and this liquid is filtered and now becomes concentrated whey. This then goes through a further process to purify the whey protein and remove fat and lactose. It then is dried, hence, becoming the isolate whey protein powder. If it is dried before removing the fat and lactose it is known as whey protein powder. Often, individuals that are lactose intolerant can take whey protein isolate since the lactose has been removed.

In old days, whey and curds were often discarded or added to animal feed, thinking they were less significant than the milk or cheese, until farmers and vets noticed the animals were a lot healthier when fed this. Research discovered the significance of this protein and the rest is history.

Why is whey protein powder good for you?

  • Absorbed quickly in the body
  • Best protein source
  • Aids in growth for muscles and bones
  • Promotes healthy skin, hair and nails
  • Increases Metabolism
  • Gives a feeling of fullness
  • Replenishes muscles and tissues

Who can benefit from Whey Protein and Isolate Whey Protein Powder?

Building Muscle
Building Muscle

Athletes - Body Builders, Runners and High Energy Sports Individuals

Since whey protein powder can be digested easily and quickly, it can reach the muscles faster than protein from other sources. After a strenuous workout your muscles need a good supply of protein fast and this is the best way to ensure this. This will also help you gain muscle since protein is what builds muscle.

Weight Loss Seeking Individuals

Since protein helps build muscle and the more muscle mass you have the higher your metabolism, whey protein powders will help give you the protein your body needs and help satisfy your appetite, which in turn helps you to eat less. It does not, however, take the place of a good diet and regular exercise program. But taking this along with the aforesaid will lend to weight loss.

There are a lot of whey protein powders to choose from on the market. Here is where it is important to not just take the cheapest whey protein powder. Spending a little more and buying it from a reputable company will ensure the best dietary value for your body. Look at the ingredients and make sure it doesn't have a lot of fillers and items you don't know what they are. Some of the best are with the whey protein or whey protein isolate and stevia leaf (to sweeten) and that's it! You do not want to be taking preservatives - this will defeat the purpose of taking something for your health. A good place to buy whey protein powder is at a natural health food store. Ask knowledgable staff at the store. Sisu and Vega are two brands that are good sources.

Thanks Mrs asif. I think a lot of the population is lactose intolerant but does not know it. Whey is one good way to get some protein, although I do think there other ways too.

I agree with Mrs. asif. Almost all of us are lactose intolerants. I've written a hub on it, too. But with whey, I tried developing my muscles in the early 2000 but I cannot workout regularly. So, my body returned to my old self...a slim-type of guy in town (LOL!!!). Thanks for sharing!
